The HoverTech National Sales Manager and the Injury Prevention Consultant performed a hospital-wide assessment in a 280 bed hospital in central New York in 2001. The assessment involved speaking with the nursing department and ancillary department managers regarding their tasks of patient handling and repositioning, as well as patient flow. Central Supply, housekeeping and the laundry were involved as well. Additionally, the OSHA logs and Loss Runs were reviewed to determine an historical baseline of number of injuries associated with patient handling and repositioning tasks and the resultant costs of those injuries.

The survey revealed the hospital was spending $585,000 per year in direct costs related to injuries incurred in lateral patient transfer and repositioning tasks and a total of $2,925,000 per year in costs when estimating the indirect costs of those injuries to be four times the direct costs. The hospital’s HR department agreed with these numbers, establishing a benchmark. And, because of the extent of the costs, the hospital chose to begin the safety program by installing the HoverMatt® Patient Transfer Systems throughout their facility.

The order was delivered in September, 2002, and the Guaranteed Safety Program began in January, 2003, following extensive in-servicing conducted by HoverTech representatives. The following summarizes the success of the program:

We firmly believe in these positive results...

HoverTech International consultants will design a program following a thorough assessment of your facility (at no charge!) that includes review of OSHA 300 logs, loss runs and interviews with all department managers. At this time, costs from lateral transfer and repositioning injuries are averaged over a number of years and a "benchmark" is established upon which to measure savings.

The hospital must agree to implement a hospital-wide No-Lift Policy. This is defined as "most routine patient handling tasks will be completed with a mechanical assistive device". This policy shall be monitored carefully and supported by formalized personnel details. It is also understood that any incident/injury incurred while not using the assistive device is not included in this Guarantee.

Upon mutual acceptance of the design, the conditions and hospital benchmarks, HoverTech International consultants will engineer a complete installation of the Program including installation of equipment, assistance with the drafting of protocols and procedures and thorough 24/7 in servicing.

The Guarantee states that under the Agreed Upon Terms and Conditions, the Workers’ Compensation savings will equal or exceed the cost of the program within two years or HoverTech International will reimburse the difference to the hospital. (Recently, a hospital has achieved the guaranteed savings in just eight months!)
